Germany has designated Barbara Voss as the new ambassador to Georgia, to replace Peter Fischer, an outspoken diplomat who announced the end of his tenure late in June as relations between the two countries remained strained.
Voss, a longtime diplomat, has served in the German foreign service since 1992, with her career spanning both work at the Berlin headquarters and overseas postings, most recently as Consul General in Kolkata, India.
“The current tensions are placing a strain on Germany’s and the EU’s relations with Georgia. Nevertheless, Germany’s commitment to the country’s democratic and pro-European course remains unchangedly strong,” Voss, an “Ambassador-Designate” in Georgia since August, is quoted on the website of the German Embassy in Tbilisi.
