BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 12. Tajikistan and
Japan discussed expanding cooperation in the energy and water
sectors, with a focus on investment, technology transfers and the
implementation of major infrastructure projects.
This was reflected in the statement by the Ministry of Energy
and Water Resources of Tajikistan, following a meeting between
Tajikistan’s Minister of Energy and Water Resources Daler Juma and
Japan’s Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Eri Arfiya
in Dushanbe.
The sides reviewed the current state of bilateral cooperation in
energy and water resources and exchanged views on prospects for
expanding engagement in these sectors.
Particular attention was given to attracting Japanese investment
and advanced technologies to Tajikistan, as well as applying
Japan’s experience to support the further development and
modernization of the country’s energy and water infrastructure.
The sides also discussed the implementation of major energy
projects, including the construction of a new electrical substation
in Dushanbe and the modernization of the Varzob-2 hydropower
plant.
“The parties paid particular attention to expanding cooperation
in investment, attracting modern technologies and using Japan’s
advanced experience for the further development of Tajikistan’s
energy and water sectors,” the ministry said.
The discussions come as Tajikistan seeks to strengthen its
energy infrastructure and improve the reliability and efficiency of
its power system. Cooperation with Japan could provide
opportunities to bring additional financing, technical expertise
and modern equipment into projects aimed at upgrading existing
infrastructure and expanding electricity capacity.
The planned modernization of Varzob-2 is particularly relevant
to efforts to improve the performance of existing hydropower
assets, while the new substation in Dushanbe could strengthen the
capital’s electricity infrastructure and support growing
demand.
The two sides also emphasized the importance of continued
coordination in implementing priority projects and identifying new
areas for cooperation.
The meeting underscored the broader potential for Tajik-Japanese
cooperation in infrastructure development, particularly as
Tajikistan works to modernize its energy and water sectors through
investment and advanced technological solutions.
