BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 11. Kazakhstan is
implementing 24 investment agreements covering energy projects with
a combined capacity of 3.8 GW.
This was reported by the Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan
following a meeting of the Public Council on Fuel and Energy
Complex issues held on August 11.
According to the ministry, nine investment agreements with a
combined capacity of 963 MW have been implemented to date. The
agreements are aimed at modernizing, expanding, reconstructing and
upgrading energy facilities.
The meeting also addressed the development of solar and wind
generation, hydropower and hydrogen energy, as well as energy
storage systems.
Kazakhstan plans to commission more than 8 GW of additional
renewable energy capacity by 2035, according to the ministry.
The country is also working on the development of energy storage
systems and distributed generation, as well as updating its Concept
for the Development of Hydrogen Energy until 2040.
Meanwhile, Kazakhstan has been pursuing a broad modernization of
its power sector amid rising electricity demand and the need to
renew aging infrastructure. In 2024, electricity consumption
reached 119.9 billion kWh, exceeding generation of 117.9 billion
kWh, according to the country's Ministry of Energy. The ministry
has said that the average wear of power-generating equipment was
about 56%, highlighting the need for new capacity and upgrades.
The country is also upgrading its electricity grid as part of a
national modernization project covering 2025-2029. The program
envisages renewing energy and utility infrastructure, including at
least 30 combined heat and power plants. In 2025, around 17,000
kilometers of power lines and 420 substations were overhauled,
helping reduce the wear of the electricity networks to 66%.
This modernization is being carried out alongside the expansion
of renewable energy and the development of a more flexible power
system. As of the second quarter of 2026, Kazakhstan had 169
renewable energy facilities with a combined installed capacity of
about 3.75 GW.
