BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 11. Uzbekistan and the
University of California, Berkeley are exploring cooperation on
artificial intelligence, digitalization and innovation in
agriculture, with a focus on developing AI-based decision-making
tools and strengthening technological skills in the country's
agricultural sector.
This was reflected in the statement by the Ministry pf
Agriculture of Uzbekistan following a meeting between Uzbek
Agriculture Minister Ibrohim Abdurahmonov and Professor Yahya
Tabesh, a senior researcher at the UC Berkeley AMENA Center for
Entrepreneurship and Development and an AI researcher.
The two sides discussed the introduction of AI technologies into
agriculture, data-driven management and the development of "smart"
technologies that could improve decision-making across the
agricultural sector.
Particular attention was given to potential cooperation with UC
Berkeley in education and research. Proposals included bringing
professors and experts to Uzbekistan, organizing practical training
for students and local specialists, and developing joint
educational and research programs.
The meeting also included a preliminary concept for establishing
an AI innovation park in Uzbekistan. The proposed facility could
support the application of AI across agriculture, industry, energy,
logistics and other priority sectors while providing an environment
for education, practical training and the development of innovative
projects.
"Artificial intelligence should not replace human capabilities,
but rather strengthen them," was one of the key principles
highlighted during the discussions.
Tabesh also emphasized the importance of developing creativity,
ethical thinking, human-centered approaches and imagination
alongside technical knowledge as AI becomes increasingly integrated
into education and the economy.
The participants discussed introducing more modern approaches to
agricultural education, including project-based learning, practical
problem-solving and programs designed to strengthen creative
thinking.
For Uzbekistan, integrating AI into agriculture could have
implications beyond technology adoption. Data-driven farming and
automated decision-making systems could help improve resource
management, productivity and operational efficiency, while stronger
links with international universities could support the development
of a skilled workforce capable of applying these technologies.
The proposed AI innovation park could also provide a broader
platform for connecting agricultural technology with other sectors,
potentially supporting startups, research projects and technology
transfer.
The sides expressed interest in taking cooperation forward
through joint research, education and innovation initiatives.
