The death toll from flooding in India's north-eastern state of Assam has risen to 85, with more than 300,000 people affected, state disaster authorities said on August 3, as rescue teams continued operations following heavy monsoon rains.
Thus, flooding has inundated 349 villages and damaged around 15,400 hectares of agricultural land, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
The Indian Army and Air Force have been deployed to support rescue and relief efforts amid what authorities described as an unprecedented flood situation. Drones are being used to deliver food, medicine and other essential supplies to people stranded in remote areas cut off by floodwaters.
Authorities have established 44 relief camps across 10 districts, where around 15,000 displaced residents are being sheltered. Humanitarian assistance centres are also providing aid to communities affected by the flooding.
Seasonal monsoon rains regularly trigger flooding in Assam, but this year's deluge has caused widespread disruption, damaging farmland and displacing thousands of people.
