A magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck Egypt, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).
The agency said the epicentre was located about 37 kilometres north of the city of Suez, which has a population of around 699,000. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres.
The tremor was also felt in southern and central Israel.
There have been no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
