FIFA is considering the possibility of expanding the FIFA World Cup to 64 national teams.
Speaking to blue Sport, FIFA President Gianni Infantino said the idea should be evaluated after the conclusion of the current World Cup.
Infantino stated that the proposal should be examined after the current World Cup, arguing that countries from all regions should have the opportunity to aspire to participate in the tournament, rather than limiting such prospects primarily to Europe and South America.
He described the expansion of the tournament to 48 teams — introduced for the first time at the 2026 FIFA World Cup — as a “huge success.”
The FIFA president suggested that further expansion could help increase global representation and provide more countries with an opportunity to compete on football’s biggest stage.
