A car drove into a crowd of football fans in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, during celebrations of Mexico’s national team victory at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, leaving 17 people injured, including the driver.
One of the injured remains in intensive care, local authorities said. Medical assistance was provided to all victims, including the driver, who was detained after the incident, according to foreign media.
The vehicle was initially surrounded by fans and attempted to pass slowly through the crowd, but then suddenly accelerated and struck several people. After the car stopped, bystanders pulled the driver out of the vehicle and assaulted him, the report added.
Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances of the incident.
The day before, Mexico defeated the Czech Republic 3–0, finishing the group stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at the top of their group with three wins in three matches.
The Mexican Football Federation expressed support for the injured and wished them a speedy recovery.
