Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer set a new record for the most appearances by a goalkeeper at the World Cup after starting in his side’s second group-stage match against Côte d’Ivoire.

The match at BMO Field in Toronto marked the 40-year-old’s 21st appearance at the tournament, surpassing former France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, who made 20 World Cup appearances, according to foreign media.

Neuer made his debut for the Germany national team in June 2009 and has earned 125 caps for his country. The current World Cup is the fifth of his international career.
