Friedrich Merz, Chancellor of Germany, has welcomed the two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran, expressing strong support for ongoing diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict.

Speaking to reporters, Merz thanked Pakistan for mediating the agreement and stressed that the immediate goal should be to negotiate a long-term cessation of hostilities. “This can only be achieved by diplomacy,” he said.

Merz highlighted that the talks aim to protect civilians in Iran, ensure regional security, and potentially prevent a global energy crisis. “The German government supports these diplomatic efforts and is in close dialogue with the US and other partners,” he added.

The chancellor also affirmed Germany’s commitment to ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz as part of its contribution to regional stability.
