Steven Spielberg says he never used AI in his films

Renowned filmmaker Steven Spielberg said he has never used artificial intelligence in the production of his films, according to a report by TechCrunch.

Speaking at the South by Southwest in Austin, Spielberg addressed a question about the role of AI in filmmaking. “I have never used AI in any of my films,” the director said, drawing applause from the audience.

At the same time, Spielberg stressed that he is not opposed to technology in general. Many of his works have explored the impact of technological advances on society, including films such as Minority Report, Ready Player One, and A.I. Artificial Intelligence. However, he said he is not willing to replace human creativity with machines in the filmmaking process.

Spielberg added that while he supports the use of AI in many fields, he does not consider it acceptable to replace creative professionals. He noted that in his writers’ rooms there is “no empty chair with a laptop,” emphasising the absence of automated participation in developing ideas.

Meanwhile, AI technologies are increasingly being introduced into the film industry. Startups are offering tools for independent filmmakers with limited resources, while major streaming platforms are experimenting with AI-based production solutions, TechCrunch reported. This year, Amazon announced it was testing AI tools for film and television production, while Netflix previously acquired a company founded by Ben Affleck working in the field of AI-driven filmmaking.
