The United States will permanently close its consulate in Peshawar, Pakistan, the US diplomatic mission located closest to neighbouring Afghanistan, according to the US State Department.
Officials said the decision is part of a broader restructuring effort under the administration of US President Donald Trump aimed at reducing costs and streamlining diplomatic operations. The department estimates the closure will save approximately $7.5 million annually, Caliber.Az reports via Clash Report on X.
Consular services previously provided in Peshawar will be transferred to the United States Embassy in Islamabad, ensuring continued access to diplomatic and visa assistance for residents in the region.
