Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan held a phone conversation during which they discussed the Iranian drone attacks on Nakhchivan, Haber Global reports.
The call came after drones launched from Iranian territory struck civilian locations in Nakhchivan on March 5, 2026, at around midday. One UAV hit the terminal building of Nakhchivan International Airport, while another crashed near a school in the village of Shakarabad, causing property damage and injuring four civilians.
The Azerbaijani government condemned the strikes as violations of international law and accepted norms, warning that such actions further destabilise the region. Iran’s Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Mojtaba Demirchilu, was summoned to the Foreign Ministry, where a formal diplomatic protest was lodged.
Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Defence stated that the attacks “will not go unanswered” and announced measures to protect the country’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and civilian infrastructure.
Officials emphasised that the strikes deliberately targeted civilian facilities without military justification, placing full responsibility on Iran, and confirmed that a comprehensive investigation is underway, including an analysis of the UAVs involved.
