The Zayed Award for Human Fraternity ceremony is being held in Abu Dhabi, with President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev amongst the award recipients.
Other laureates include Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan, Afghan human rights and girls’ education activist Zarqa Yaftali, and the Palestinian charitable organization Taawon.
The award for the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia was granted for the signing of the “Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and Inter-State Relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Armenia,” which ended the long-standing conflict between the two countries.
The Zayed Award for Human Fraternity was established in 2019 based on a document signed by the Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, Sheikh of Al-Azhar, Supreme Imam Ahmed Mohamed Ahmed Al-Tayeb, and the late Pope Francis. The award aims to promote the humanitarian legacy and values of the founder of the United Arab Emirates, the country’s first president, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.
