Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar has said that he had urged France to support the European Union’s decision to designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organisation.
“For decades, the IRGC has worked to spread terror and instability in the Middle East and beyond. Today, it carries out deadly repression against the Iranian people, who are fighting for their freedom,” Sa’ar wrote on X, cited by Caliber.Az.
He said that including the IRGC on the European Union’s list of terrorist organisations would be both a morally justified and effective measure, sending a clear signal to the Iranian people: “We hear your voice. You are not alone.”
In response to the brutal repression of the ongoing protests in Iran that followed the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini after moral police custody, the European Union has put in place numerous sanctions against Iran.
In light of the repression of the ongoing protests and following the execution of anti-regime protestors, the European Parliament passed a resolution demanding the condemnation of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist group.
Spain, Italy, Luxembourg, and France opposed recognising the IRGC as a terrorist group.
