Russian communications regulator Roskomnadzor has escalated measures against WhatsApp, warning that the popular messaging service could face a complete block if it continues to ignore Russian legal requirements.

The regulator’s press service told ASTRA that “if the requirements of Russian legislation are still not met by the messenger, it will be completely blocked.”

The warning comes after users across the country reported difficulties sending messages. Since the start of the day, WhatsApp’s performance has reportedly slowed by 70–80%.
