St Petersburg may introduce petrol rationing based on odd and even vehicle registration numbers amid a fuel shortage, Governor Alexander Drozdenko has said.
Authorities are considering allowing motorists to refuel on alternate days depending on whether their registration number is odd or even, Drozdenko said.
Long queues at petrol stations were reported in the region last week following recent drone attacks on oil refineries, including the Kirishi oil refinery in the Leningrad Region.
Drozdenko said he expected the situation to improve “by the beginning of October”. Authorities and oil companies are restructuring fuel supply chains to bring petrol in from other regions.
The latest fuel shortage in St Petersburg began after a Ukrainian attack on Kirishinefteorgsintez, one of Russia’s largest oil refineries, in the Leningrad Region. The facility halted operations on 2 September.
