Germany is not discussing a downgrade in diplomatic relations with Russia, but Berlin is currently capable of taking “any absurd steps”, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday, September 3.
“Germany is not discussing downgrading diplomatic relations with Russia, but it is now capable of taking any absurd steps,” Peskov said, according to TASS.
Peskov also said he believed Russia would not take the initiative to downgrade diplomatic relations with Germany.
The remarks come amid heightened tensions between Moscow and Berlin. The German government has blamed Russia for a drone incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport and announced a series of countermeasures. These include the closure of Russia’s Consulate General in Bonn on September 18, the termination of an agreement governing the Russian House in Berlin, and tighter entry controls for Russian citizens.
