BAKU, Azerbaijan,
September 1. The European Alliance of News
Agencies (EANA), representing 33 news agencies across Europe, has
joined the SPUR Coalition as an affiliate member, according to
EANA.
The SPUR Coalition brings together organizations from the news
industry seeking to establish technical standards and commercial
frameworks governing the use of publishers’ content by generative
artificial intelligence platforms.
The initiative was launched by organizations including the BBC,
Financial Times, Sky News, Guardian Media Group, Telegraph Media
Group and Associated Press. Its work focuses on enabling content
owners to monitor how their intellectual property is used by AI
applications and creating conditions for transparent licensing.
According to EANA, the affiliation will allow its member
agencies to access SPUR resources and participate in discussions on
content licensing, usage transparency and the development of
standards for cooperation between news organizations and AI
companies.
“EANA's affiliation with the SPUR Coalition is a natural
extension of our mission to defend the interests of news agencies
and the journalism they produce. For seventy years now, our
alliance has stood for cooperation, news accuracy and
trustworthiness, and the public value of that trusted information,”
EANA Secretary General Alexandru Giboi said.
He added that joining the coalition would allow EANA to
contribute the perspective of European news agencies to discussions
over the role and value of journalism in the era of generative
AI.
SPUR co-founder David Buttle said that news agencies represented
by EANA produce journalism that is valuable to companies developing
and deploying AI systems.
“The SPUR Coalition was founded to change that. We are building
open technical standards that give publishers visibility and
control over how their content is used within AI applications, and
that make a functioning licensing market possible,” he said.
EANA was founded in 1956 and currently has 33 member agencies
across Europe. It is headquartered in Bern, Switzerland.
The SPUR Coalition is a non-profit industry initiative focused
on developing standards for reporting content usage and
establishing technical and commercial infrastructure for
transparent transactions between publishers and AI platforms.
