Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo will host a European Arctic Summit in Rovaniemi on September 13-14, bringing together a group of European Union leaders to discuss the bloc’s strategic approach to the Arctic.
According to the Finnish Government, the summit aims to strengthen the EU’s common strategic approach to the region as its geopolitical importance grows, the Finnish Prime Minister’s Office said on August 24.
“The Arctic region is an increasingly important part of Europe's security environment,” Orpo said, adding that the EU had direct interests in the region’s stability, security and sustainable development.
The meeting will be attended by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal, Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda and Romanian President Nicușor Dan.
European Council President António Costa and EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas will also attend.
The leaders will hold a working dinner with Finnish President Alexander Stubb on September 13.
Orpo has hosted other meetings focused on European security in Finland in recent years. The Eastern Flank Summit was held in Helsinki in December 2025, while the North South Summit on European security challenges took place in Saariselkä in December 2024.
