BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 21. Kazakhstan is
ready to consider a project developed by Finnish company Lamor
Corporation to improve the environmental sustainability of the
Caspian Sea, Kazakhstan's Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources
said.
The issue was discussed during a meeting in Astana between
Kazakhstan's Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources
Yerlan
Nyssanbayev and Finnish Parliament Member Ville Skinnari.
The Kazakh side expressed readiness to thoroughly review Lamor
Corporation's concept once it is officially submitted.
" Kazakhstan supports the key areas of the project -
environmental monitoring, oil spill response and ecosystem
restoration - and welcomes an approach to its implementation under
the leadership of Kazakhstan with the technical participation of
Finnish partners," the ministry said.
The project is being discussed within the framework of
Kazakhstan-Finland cooperation and environmental initiatives under
the European Union's Global Gateway program.
The sides also discussed the possible participation of Finnish
partners in other environmental projects in Kazakhstan, including
the development of a regional forestry training center for Central
Asian countries, Finnish water treatment technologies and
cooperation between Kazhydromet and the Finnish Meteorological
Institute.
The proposed forestry center, to be developed jointly with the
UNDP near Astana, is expected to train more than 1,000 specialists
annually, with its preliminary budget estimated at $40 million.
