BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 12. The work done on
the development of the capital market has been discussed in
Azerbaijan.
This was announced in a report released by the Central Bank of
Azerbaijan (CBA), following the meeting between Deputy Chairman Ali
Ahmadov and the heads of the Azerbaijan Capital Markets
Association, the Baku Stock Exchange, the National Depository
Center, and investment companies.
According to the CBA, the meeting discussed the dynamics of
capital market development in the second quarter of 2026, the
performance of investment companies, as well as the main trends and
prospects observed in the sector. In addition, the work done on the
development of the capital market in the current year within the
framework of the "Strategy for the development of the financial
sector in 2024–2026" was reviewed.
The meeting included an exchange of views on the main challenges
in the capital market, including initiatives aimed at promoting the
active participation of real sector representatives in the market,
increasing the level of digitalization of the sector, and
increasing financial literacy.
The relevant international cooperation is also expanding. The
Asian Development Bank (ADB) has launched a project aimed at the
development of capital markets with the participation of
Azerbaijan.
According to ADB information, the program covers 43 countries
and economies in the Asia-Pacific region, including Azerbaijan,
Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Türkiye,
Uzbekistan, and other countries.
Meanwhile, it's planned to allocate $225,000 from the ADB's
Special Fund for Technical Assistance to finance the project.
The information notes that the program aims to support the
development of capital markets in participating countries and the
expansion of existing opportunities in this area.
According to ADB information for 2015-2024, Azerbaijan received
$2.53 billion in sovereign financing for 10 projects. Of this
amount, 51% was allocated to regional cooperation and integration
projects.
In the mentioned period, the bank approved 9 non-sovereign
projects totaling $963.9 million, with 100% of the financing
directed toward private sector development.
According to the CBA, ADB's direct investment in the country's
economy amounted to $2.07 million in the 1st quarter of this year.
This figure is $455,000, or 28.1%, higher than the same period last
year.
