India has appointed Vishwesh Negi as its new ambassador to Iran, the country's Ministry of External Affairs has announced.

It said Negi, who currently serves as a Joint Secretary at the ministry, is expected to assume his duties in Tehran shortly, Caliber.Az reports.

He will succeed Rudra Gaurav Shresth, who has been appointed India's ambassador to Türkiye.

The new envoy has extensive experience in international security, defence cooperation, relations with Pakistan and multilateral diplomacy within the United Nations.

His appointment is expected to support further expansion of India-Iran cooperation in energy, trade, transport connectivity and regional security.
