US President Donald Trump has warned that Tehran has one final opportunity to reach an agreement before the United States considers military action against the country's leadership, saying "this is a last chance."
Speaking to reporters in the White House, Trump said the United States and Iran are making rapid progress in negotiations and are discussing the full restoration of normal shipping through the Strait of Hormuz as early as Tuesday, August 4, Caliber.Az reports.
“We're talking at the request of Iran, backed by Saudi Arabia, backed by UAE and backed by Qatar in particular, but others also <…> they all wanted to give this a last chance. This is a last chance. This is not something that if it doesn't happen, this is a last chance for them to sign a good document. <…> To do an attack that big on a country I’d rather not to. Now we've already through lots of large attacks but they were normal large. Hopefully they'll come to their senses,” Trump noted.
He described the negotiations as proceeding not very difficultly and made it clear that the current stage represented Tehran's final opportunity to avoid a strike against the country's leadership.
The president reiterated that passage through the strait would be free for all vessels, claiming the United States had established full control over the waterway and would not allow Iran to collect any fees.
According to Trump, restoring normal maritime traffic would be only the first step, after which the two sides would move on to negotiations over Tehran's nuclear program.
"The second phase will be the denuclearisation. And that’ll take a little while. But we are very strong on it. They cannot have a nuclear weapon. Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon," he added.
