The death toll from the powerful earthquake that struck Japan's Kumamoto Prefecture on the island of Kyushu has risen to 38, while at least 139 people have been injured, according to consolidated data from prefectural authorities and emergency services.
Water supply disruptions continue to affect around 69,000 households. At least 9,200 people also remain in evacuation centers after being displaced in the immediate aftermath of the disaster, Caliber.Az reports per Russian media.
The magnitude 7.1 earthquake, which struck on July 28, was one of the strongest to hit Japan in recent years. In addition to emergency responders and specialized agencies, about 4,600 personnel from the Japan Self-Defense Forces are taking part in relief and recovery operations.
