The number of people injured in a 4.7-magnitude earthquake that struck the Phlegraean Fields volcanic region near Naples has risen to 26, according to Italy's Civil Protection Agency.
The overnight quake prompted the evacuation of hundreds of residents, with approximately 300 people forced to leave their homes due to damage and safety concerns. A temporary shelter with 185 beds has been opened in the nearby city of Pozzuoli to accommodate those displaced, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
According to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the earthquake's epicentre was located about 11 kilometres from Naples. The main shock was followed by a series of aftershocks ranging in magnitude from 3.8 to 0.6.
Italian daily Corriere della Sera reported that more than 40 tremors were recorded in total. The newspaper said 20 of the injured were in stable condition, while two others were seriously injured, although the Civil Protection Agency later updated the overall number of injured to 26.
Authorities also evacuated 22 families from affected areas. The most significant structural damage was reported in Naples, while rail services were temporarily suspended as inspections of transport infrastructure were carried out.
The Phlegraean Fields, or Campi Flegrei, is one of Europe's largest active volcanic calderas and has experienced increased seismic activity in recent years, prompting heightened monitoring by Italian authorities.
