The European Union's naval mission in the Red Sea, EUNAVFOR ASPIDES, said an Italian warship had successfully escorted a merchant vessel through the waterway, underscoring the operation's role in protecting commercial shipping.
In a post on X, the mission said the merchant ship completed its transit safely under the protection of the Italian frigate BERGAMINI, Caliber.Az reports.
“EUNAVFOR ASPIDES is a purely defensive operation committed to keeping sea lanes safe and supporting regional stability,” the mission said.
EUNAVFOR ASPIDES is the European Union's maritime security operation in the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean and the Gulf, established to help safeguard commercial shipping and contribute to regional stability amid ongoing security challenges in the region.
