US President Donald Trump has said it is possible that Greenland could come under US control before the end of his current presidential term in January 2029, reiterating his longstanding ambition to acquire the Arctic territory.
Speaking in an interview with Real America's Voice, Trump responded to host Steve Gruber's prediction that Greenland would be under US operational control by the conclusion of his presidency, Caliber.Az reports.
Trump then added with a laugh:
Greenland is a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, with authority over its domestic affairs, while Denmark retains responsibility for foreign policy and defence.
Trump has repeatedly argued that the United States should acquire Greenland, saying the island is strategically important for US national security. He has maintained that American control of the territory is necessary to counter the growing influence of Russia and China in the Arctic.
The proposal has been strongly opposed by Denmark and Greenlandic leaders, who have rejected any suggestion that the island could be transferred to US control. Trump's repeated calls to acquire Greenland have also strained relations with several European allies, who view the idea as a challenge to Greenland's sovereignty.
Earlier this year, Trump threatened to impose a 10% tariff on imports from several European allies, including Denmark, until an agreement was reached on what he described as the "complete and total purchase of Greenland." The tariffs were later shelved following talks with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, which Trump described as productive.
Despite the diplomatic tensions easing, Trump has continued to publicly advocate for US control of Greenland, most recently sharing an edited image on his Truth Social platform depicting the island beneath an American flag.
