Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker has urged Spain to prevent illegal migrants from reaching mainland Europe, warning that Austria could temporarily close its Schengen borders if migration pressures intensify.
In a post on X, Stocker said the situation in Spain serves as "a clear warning signal" and that he is closely monitoring developments while remaining in contact with EU Commissioner Magnus Brunner, Europe Minister Claudia Bauer and Interior Minister Gerhard Karner, Caliber.Az reports.
"The current developments in Spain are a clear warning signal—we are monitoring the situation very closely, and I am in close contact with EU Commissioner Magnus Brunner, Europe Minister Claudia Bauer, and Interior Minister Gerhard Karner. Conditions like these have no place in the European Union," Stocker wrote.
The Austrian chancellor said Spain must meet its responsibilities under the European Union's migration framework.
Stocker also criticised what he described as unilateral migration policies, arguing that they undermine the EU's common asylum system.
He reiterated Austria's support for the European Asylum and Migration Pact, calling for its rapid implementation.
Stocker added that Austria would take steps to safeguard its borders if the situation in Spain leads to increased migration pressure.
Earlier, a growing group of European countries called for action against Spain over migration pressures in its North African enclave of Ceuta, including proposals to suspend the country's membership in the Schengen Area. The Czech Republic and Denmark have also joined the initiative.
