Severe flooding in India’s northeastern state of Assam has killed at least 78 people and affected hundreds of thousands, authorities said.
The death toll rose after three additional fatalities were reported in the past 24 hours, according to the State Disaster Management Authority, cited by Hindi News18.
Floodwaters have impacted seven districts — Sivasagar, Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon, Biswanath, and Kamrup metropolitan district — inundating hundreds of settlements.
Around 332,000 people have been affected by the disaster, with more than 16,000 displaced and housed in temporary shelters. Approximately 300,000 residents remain in flood-affected areas.
The flooding began on July 19 following heavy rainfall across Assam and neighbouring Nagaland, causing the Dikhow, Disang, and Dhansiri rivers to overflow.
