CENTCOM: US helped nearly 1,000 vessels transit Strait of Hormuz since May

The US military has helped nearly 1,000 vessels transit the Strait of Hormuz since the beginning of May, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced.

“Since early May, CENTCOM forces have helped approximately 1,000 vessels and 500 million barrels of crude oil pass through the narrow waterway,” the command said in a statement.

The announcement came after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed that international commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz should use only routes designated by the corps.

“The Strait of Hormuz is an international waterway. The IRGC has no authority to dictate routes for free and open traffic flow,” CENTCOM noted.
