Iran-backed Iraqi militia Hashd al-Shaabi has accused the United States and Saudi Arabia of carrying out strikes on its bases in several parts of Iraq, claiming the attacks caused casualties.
According to Iran's IRIB News agency, the group described the strikes as "an extremely dangerous escalation" and said they violated Iraq's territorial integrity. It said the attacks resulted in deaths and injuries but did not provide casualty figures.
Earlier, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said it had conducted joint precision strikes with Saudi Arabia against positions of Iran-backed armed groups in Iraq.
The US military said the targeted groups had been deployed by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to prepare attacks on US forces and Saudi Arabia's energy infrastructure.
Hashd al-Shaabi, also known as the Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF), is an umbrella organisation of predominantly Shia armed factions in Iraq. The group was established in 2014 and, according to the source material, has an estimated strength of around 200,000 fighters.
