French authorities have arrested a 23-year-old man suspected of starting several vegetation fires that later developed into major wildfires.

The suspect has been formally charged and remains in custody, Caliber.Az reports, citing Le Figaro.

Investigators believe he may be linked to a series of suspected arson attacks carried out between July 19 and 24 near the towns of Brignoles, Cabasse, and Vins-sur-Caramy in the Var department, one of the French regions hardest hit by wildfires.

The investigation is largely based on CCTV footage, which investigators say is the key evidence in the case.

Authorities also plan to conduct a psychiatric evaluation of the suspect.
