A Seoul court on July 27 sentenced former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol to an 18-month prison term, suspended for three years, after finding him guilty of violating the country's election law during his 2022 presidential campaign.
The Seoul Central District Court ruled that Yoon, then the presidential candidate of the main opposition People Power Party (PPP), made false statements ahead of the March 2022 election, Caliber.Az reports, citing Korean media.
Under South Korean election law, if the conviction is upheld with a prison sentence or a fine of at least 1 million won (about $685), the People Power Party will be required to repay the 39.7 billion won ($27 million) it received as reimbursement for campaign expenses.
On June 12, a lower court sentenced Yoon Suk Yeol to 30 years in prison for allegedly sending drones to Pyongyang in an attempt to create a pretext for declaring martial law.
