More than 10 people were detained in Buenos Aires after unrest broke out following Argentina’s defeat in the World Cup final.
Thousands of fans gathered on the streets of the capital to watch the match, hoping to see Lionel Messi’s team retain the world title, Caliber.Az reports via Mirror.
However, Argentina lost to Spain 1-0. Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in extra time, while Enzo Fernández was sent off during regulation time.
After the final whistle in New Jersey, clashes broke out between players from both teams. Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes was shown a red card after the match following a confrontation with Spain defender Eric García.
According to Argentine outlet Infobae, the situation in Buenos Aires remained calm until around 23:45 local time (06:45 on July 20 Baku time), when clashes between fans and police erupted near the city’s iconic Obelisk monument. The unrest began after a group of supporters attempted to break through security barriers installed around the monument.
Meanwhile, Argentine President Javier Milei thanked the national team for their efforts in a social media post.
“Thank you very much to the players! You fought until the end. Argentina is always at the top,” Milei wrote.
