Iran has warned against any foreign military presence in the Strait of Hormuz, following statements by the United Kingdom and France indicating readiness to support freedom of navigation in the strategic waterway.
Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi issued the warning in a post on X, stressing Tehran’s opposition to external military activity in the strait, as per Caliber.Az.
“The Strait of Hormuz is not a place for military demonstrations by foreign powers. Iran, as a responsible power and guarantor of security in the strait, warns against any military actions in this waterway,” he wrote.
Gharibabadi emphasised that responsibility for security in the strait lies with regional states. “Security in Hormuz belongs to the coastal states,” he said, adding that “those who create crises will bear responsibility for the consequences of their adventurism. This is a serious warning.”
His comments came after Britain and France signalled their willingness to deploy a broader multinational mission aimed at safeguarding shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy transit route. The two countries also indicated plans to work with Oman to ensure safe navigation within its territorial waters.
