Russia expects experts to complete an assessment by December of the economic and legal implications of a possible suspension of Armenia's participation in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin said.
Speaking in an interview with RTVI, Galuzin addressed questions about how Armenia's participation in the Moscow-led economic bloc could be suspended, noting that the EAEU Treaty does not contain provisions for expelling member states unless they voluntarily decide to withdraw.
Galuzin said the leaders of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan had recently adopted a joint statement expressing concern that Armenia's decision to begin the process of joining the European Union poses risks to the economic security of the other EAEU members.
"The four leaders have instructed experts to prepare a report on the possible consequences of Armenia's suspension of its participation in the Eurasian Economic Union," Galuzin said. "I am confident that the experts will thoroughly examine both the economic and legal aspects. Let's wait for the results of the professionals' work."
According to the deputy foreign minister, the other EAEU members consider it unacceptable for Armenia to pursue EU membership while continuing to benefit from the advantages of membership in the Eurasian Economic Union.
Galuzin also argued that Armenia's legislation formally launching the country's EU accession process is politically and economically incompatible with continued membership in the EAEU.
