The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) has decided to retain Vincenzo Montella as head coach of the Turkish national team despite the country’s early elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
According to sources cited by Takvim, TFF officials and the Italian coach have reached an agreement on a series of changes involving the national team setup.
While Montella will remain in charge, adjustments are expected to be made to his coaching staff as part of the planned restructuring.
Türkiye returned to the FIFA World Cup in 2026 after a 24-year absence but suffered an early group-stage exit in Group D. They lost 2-0 to Australia in their opener and then 1-0 to Paraguay (despite Paraguay playing with 10 men for over half the match after a red card), failing to score in either game while generating a staggering volume of chances.
The team was notably unlucky in front of goal, recording a combined 62 shots across the two matches without scoring—the highest total without a goal in any two-match span at a World Cup since records began in 1966.
This wastefulness and early elimination came despite high pre-tournament expectations for the side featuring rising talents.
