The United States could in the future take control of the Strait of Hormuz and charge fees for its use, US President Donald Trump has said in an interview with Fox News.

According to him, control over the waterway would mean the US becoming a “Guardian Angel” of Hormuz and the wider Middle East.

"We may take over the Strait, if we have to,” he said. “I'll blow the s--- out of them."

Trump also emphasised that in such a scenario, the US side would take 20% of the oil passing through the strait.

The US president stressed that he had warned Iranian officials in a conversation that if the Strait of Hormuz were closed, they would face consequences. “You close it and you won't have a country,” Trump said. “You won't even make it back to your f------ country.”
