Türkiye has expressed its readiness to carry out mine-clearing operations in the Strait of Hormuz, with Defence Minister Yaşar Güler saying events in this region directly affect not only regional but also global security.

Speaking at a meeting of NATO defence ministers, Güler stated that his country welcomes the ceasefire agreement reached between the United States and Iran and is ready to provide support if necessary, Caliber.Az reports, citing Turkish media.

Güler noted that Türkiye, as a country contributing to regional and global security, prepared to support initiatives aimed at ensuring maritime safety and freedom of navigation under international law.

“Türkey, thanks to its location on NATO’s southern flank, is one of the leading allies directly countering regional threats and makes a significant contribution to the alliance through its growing strength. Today’s security environment shows that the southern flank is not only a peripheral issue but a central security concern,” he added.

The minister also said he views the upcoming NATO summit in Ankara on July 7–8 not merely as a meeting of leaders but as a turning point for the entire alliance.

According to him, NATO is facing “one of the most difficult security environments in its history,” as traditional and hybrid threats, cyberattacks, terrorism, energy security risks and regional instability are reshaping security concepts.

He stressed that Türkiye is “not only one of NATO’s geographical centres but also an integral part of its strategic, intelligence and operational capability.”

The minister further noted that Türkiye has “the second-strongest army in NATO and is among the top five contributors to alliance activities,” adding: “A strong defence industry means strong deterrence and a strong NATO.”

Güler said a Defence Industry Forum will be held during the NATO summit to enhance cooperation among allied defence industries.
