A fire on a tanker off the coast of Oman has left one person dead and two others missing, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) centre has stated.


UKMTO said the incident happened approximately 20 nautical miles (37 km) northeast of Sohar, Oman, Caliber.Az reports.


According to local authorities, the fire broke out in the vessel’s engine room.


Emergency services are currently at the scene assisting with the evacuation of the crew, the coordination centre noted.


“One fatality has been reported. Two other crew members are still missing,” UKMTO added.


The incident has been classified as “suspicious activity.” The name of the vessel has not been disclosed.
