China and North Korea have reached a series of important understandings during a recent state visit by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Chinese President Xi Jinping said in a message of thanks following the trip.

The message was sent by Xi on June 9 after Kim hosted a Chinese delegation during the visit to North Korea, North Korean state media reports.

Xi said discussions between the two sides produced “a series of important common understanding,” describing the talks as substantive and forward-looking.

“I and you, Comrade General Secretary, made an in-depth exchange of views on the issues of mutual interest and achieved a series of important common understanding,” Xi said in the message.

He added that the visit had helped further define the direction of bilateral relations and reinforced cooperation between the two countries.

Xi also expressed appreciation for the arrangements made during the visit and said the meeting reflected what he called the “deep friendship” between China and North Korea.

“The China-DPRK relations have already entered a new historic journey,” he said, adding that both sides were prepared to further develop ties based on shared long-term interests.
