BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 5. President of
Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has signed constitutional laws
establishing the institution of vice president and defining the
structure and powers of the country's new parliament, the Kurultai,
Trend reports via the
press service of the Kazakh president.
The legislation was adopted as part of the implementation of the
Constitution approved on March 15, 2026.
Under the constitutional law on the president, the office of
vice president was formally introduced into Kazakhstan's political
system. The vice president will represent the head of state in
relations with government bodies on the president's instructions
and carry out other duties assigned by the president.
Another constitutional law defines the organization and
activities of the Kurultai, which is designated as the country's
highest representative body exercising legislative power.
The Kurultai will consist of 145 deputies elected through party
lists for five-year terms. The body will be headed by a chairman
elected from among deputies who are fluent in the state
language.
The law also grants the Kurultai broad powers, including
approving the appointment of the vice president, prime minister,
Constitutional Court judges, members of the Central Election
Commission, and the Supreme Audit Chamber. It will also be
responsible for calling presidential elections and approving
government and state audit reports on the execution of the national
budget.
