Georgian authorities have detained a suspect on espionage charges, alleging that the individual passed sensitive information to foreign intelligence services over an extended period.
The State Security Service (SSG), cited by local media reports, said the detainee is the founder and head of a non-governmental organisation, as per Caliber.Az.
Investigators believe the suspect systematically transmitted intelligence-related information to the special services of two foreign countries over several years.
According to the investigation, the alleged activities were carried out in exchange for financial compensation and aimed at advancing the interests of a foreign state.
Authorities also reported that the suspect held periodic meetings with representatives of foreign entities outside Georgia, suggesting an organised pattern of contact.
The case is being treated as a serious breach of national security. If convicted, the detainee faces a prison sentence ranging from 8 to 12 years.
