Türkiye’s Foreign Ministry has criticised statements by officials in several countries regarding the events of 1915, warning against the "political exploitation" of history and urging support for ongoing reconciliation efforts in the South Caucasus.
In a statement released on April 24, the ministry stressed that a “climate of peace and reconciliation” emerging in the region represents a firm response to attempts to revive historical grievances for political purposes.
“The climate of peace and reconciliation emerging in the Southern Caucasus is a vigorous response - from those who aspire to see the region become a basin of stability and cooperation - to those who try to generate hostility from history,” the statement said.
The ministry noted that Ankara and Yerevan maintain a clear and shared position against the politicisation of the issue surrounding the events of 1915.
“On the contrary, it is observed that some third country politicians seek to exploit this issue for their narrow political interests or attempt to cover up their own responsibilities,” the ministry added.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry also recalled that the country had opened its archives for an objective and scholarly examination of the historical events and had proposed the establishment of a joint commission.
“This proposal remains on the table,” the statement emphasised.
