A German traveler recently traced his roots to a town in Azerbaijan founded by his ancestors over 200 years ago.
Nasimi Aghayev, Azerbaijan’s ambassador to Germany, shared on X that the town is Goygol, historically known as Helenendorf, according to local media.
It was established in 1819 by German settlers who arrived from the Württemberg region.
In the town’s central area, more than 300 German-style houses from the 19th century have been maintained, showcasing the architectural style of the settlers. The historic residence of Viktor Klein, thought to be the last German inhabitant of the town, remains, along with a cemetery established by the original settlers.
These historical sites continue to highlight Azerbaijan’s rich multicultural heritage and preserve the legacy of Helenendorf, keeping the memory of its German founders alive for generations.
