Iran may be able to sustain a prolonged blockade of the Strait of Hormuz targeting vessels linked to the United States and its allies, according to a report by Press TV citing a senior Iranian official.

“Iran is capable of maintaining such a situation for many years,” the official said.

The broadcaster reports that the rationale behind such a move is tied to the strategic importance of the waterway, noting that a large share of the equipment used to supply US military bases and garrisons across the Middle East has historically been transported via the Strait of Hormuz.
