On March 12, the New York Times published the results of an investigation which found 16 attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and surrounding waters since February 28. The assaults have resulted in the deaths of eight sailors, while the fate of one person remains unknown.

According to the investigation, the attacks targeted 10 tankers, three container ships, three bulk carriers, and one tugboat.
